Developing Transparent Assignments

In this interactive workshop aimed at faculty, participants will consider methods for designing transparent, effective assignments. We’ll examine the importance of helping students understand not only what to do, but why their learning is being directed in certain ways. Overall, we will consider how best to construct an assignment so that it is a truly authentic measure of student learning in the course. Participants are strongly encouraged to bring a current or former assignment concept with them to workshop together during our session!

Effective Use of Mixed and Virtual Reality in the Classroom

The use of virtual and mixed reality has been shown to improve student learning outcomes and satisfaction with the learning experience, among other benefits. However, like most emerging pedagogies, determining appropriate use of this technology in the classroom can be a challenge. In this workshop aimed at faculty, we’ll review a framework for determining if and when to implement mixed and virtual reality in teaching. We’ll explore inexpensive and easy-to-implement applications of virtual/mixed reality in a variety of disciplines, as well as providing participants an opportunity to experience virtual/mixed reality in an educational setting.

Introduction to Team Based Learning (TBL)

Are you thinking about ‘flipping’ your class, but wondering how to get started? Are you interested in incorporating more structure team learning into your teaching? Team-Based Learning (TBL) is a collaborative learning approach where students prepare to engage with course content before class and then spend class time working through application-based problems in teams. In this workshop, faculty participants will learn about the benefits of using the core TBL structure, while experiencing what it is like to be a student in a TBL classroom. Participants will also have the opportunity to brainstorm ways to incorporate the tenets of TBL into their own teaching.

Fellowship Writing Workshop – NSF, Part 2 (Danforth Campus)

Teaching Center: SoTL Faculty Learning Community

The SoTL Faculty Learning Community is designed to support faculty who are interested in incorporating SoTL research into their teaching practice. Through monthly meetings over the 2019-2020 academic year, participants will gain exposure to SoTL research from varied disciplines, design a SoTL project, and engage in conversation and build relationships with colleagues and Teaching Center staff. The SoTL Faculty Learning Community will meet First Fridays from 12:00—1:30pm on the Danforth Campus.

Teaching Center Workshop: Facilitating Challenging Conversations

This Teaching Center workshop will provide the opportunity for faculty participants to develop strategies for fostering critical thinking, open-mindedness, and civil discourse in the classroom. Faculty participants will engage with strategies for laying the groundwork necessary for having challenging conversations, learn approaches for responding to unexpectedly “hot moments,” and practice applying the strategies we discuss to common instructional situations. Facilitator: Dr. Meg Gregory, Assistant Director, Academic Services, The Teaching Center

This Research Management System 101 course will take place in a computer lab, there is no need to bring a laptop. This course will explore:

• Budget – Personnel (cost sharing, salary cap, adding personnel without effort)
• Budget – Non-personnel (bulk entry, subprojets/subawards, F&A rates)
• Routing – Building forms, Proposal Certification Forms (paper vs electronic), submitting to the Office of Sponsored Research Services (OSRS)
