Blackboard Retirement Timeline

Beginning December 31, 2019 faculty, students, and staff will no longer be able to log in to Blackboard. You should be aware of the following key dates and milestones and take action before the end of December.

  • Starting in the Summer 2019 semester, no current/new courses will be hosted in Blackboard.
  • From May 20, 2019 to December 31, 2019 Blackboard will be available only for viewing and downloading course content. Faculty may download course content to their own computers and import/migrate the content into a Canvas course (demo course or active course).
  • From January 1, 2020 to June 30, 2020 past Blackboard courses which are in a format that can be imported into a Canvas course (demo course or active course) will be available only from School Canvas Administrators.
  • After July 1, 2020 Blackboard archive files will be available by request through School Canvas Administrators. Archive files cannot be imported into Canvas; they can be extracted by an administrator into a format compatible with viewing grades and student submissions outside of Canvas. Archive files are a complete record of the course including student submissions and grades. Archive files will be available for the 7 years spanning Spring 2012 to Spring 2019.

If you anticipate needing access to past course materials, we strongly recommend you download and store them in Box or a network drive by December 31, 2019 so you have the materials if you need them. The archive retrieval process will take time so you will not have access immediately after you submit your request.

Detailed information and a timeline for the request processes will be sent out via email and published to Hello Canvas prior to the December retirement.
