Fossett Fellowships

Fossett Fellowships

This fellowship, made possible by the Fossett Fellows Endowment, is intended to help recruit exceptionally strong doctoral students to WashU.

Fellowship Details

  • Any Fossett Fellowship awarded to a program will be in addition to the program's stipend allocation.
  • The Fossett Fellowship will provide a stipend at the same rate as the A&S Fellowship for PhD Students.
  • In the current admissions cycle we plan to award up to 10 fellowships.
  • The duration of the Fossett Fellowship will be 5 years for students in the humanities, and 3-4 years in the social and natural sciences, depending on the availability of external funding opportunities for specific areas.

Nominations

To participate in this year's Fossett Fellowship competition, your doctoral program must submit a nomination by noon on Monday, February 16. Each PhD program may submit only one nomination.

Nominations should be submitted at the link below, and include the following information:

  • the details of the applicant your program is nominating, and why the nominee is deserving of this fellowship
  • a statement about innovations your program has made over the past 1-2 years, or is currently making, that will do any of the following:
    • make the program more responsive to doctoral training or professional development needs
    • expand interdisciplinary opportunities for students or create broader intellectual communities for them
    • allow the program to stand out when compared to peers
  • a statement addressing why an additional fellowship would be beneficial for your program and if you see any downsides to having an additional student in the incoming year's cohort
  • a list of employment outcomes for students who have graduated from your program in the past two years, noting the ones that you believe are most deserving of attention

The review process will consider these components as well as program selectivity.

Nomination form

Nominations will be reviewed by a committee of faculty colleagues, and fellowship awards will be announced by Monday, February 23.
