Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs

Feng Sheng Hu, the Lucille P. Markey Distinguished Professor and Dean of Arts & Sciences, is pleased to announce the search for the Vice Dean of Faculty Affairs in Arts & Sciences. The Vice Dean of Faculty Affairs holds a pivotal role in the Dean’s leadership team and is a key partner in executing the school’s vision to achieve academic distinction. The Vice Dean is responsible for managing a variety of matters related to faculty appointments, recruitment, retention and other issues that impact the success of faculty and academic units. 

The Vice Dean oversees policies regarding faculty promotion, mentoring and advancement. The Vice Dean also serves as a primary resource to faculty and chairs on issues of hiring, promotion, and tenure processes. The Vice Dean will play a role in the annual faculty review process, sabbatical, leave, and fellowship reviews, the annual unit budget review process as well as space allocation and management. The Vice Dean will also be engaged in the departmental external review process. In addition to these primary duties, the Vice Dean will play an important role in envisioning and leading a variety of new initiatives to advance the academic enterprise and reputational standing of the school.  

Key characteristics and qualifications of the ideal candidate include:

  • Experience serving in leadership roles, including department chair
  • A significant record of research, scholarship or creative endeavor in an Arts & Sciences discipline
  • The ability to collaborate with a wide variety of stakeholders, inspire and motivate others, successfully lead others through change, and act as a consensus builder
  • Flexibility, initiative, and a willingness to serve in a broad variety of roles as needed
  • A facility for diplomacy and ability to navigate difficult issues with faculty
  • A commitment to diversity and inclusion
  • Experience with financial management of budgets and programmatic planning

This position will require approximately 75% of fulltime effort with a corresponding release from departmental obligations for the duration of the assignment. It is open to all tenured, full professors in Arts & Sciences. Nominations may be sent to any member of the Dean’s Office.
